This experience report discusses the design of “HazardAware,” a website being developed to provide interactive tools for individuals and community decision-makers in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico states to learn about housing-related natural risk and mitigation options. As part of the user-centered design process, we conducted interviews with target users. We describe how participants’ experiences with natural hazards and hazard preparation helped them develop situated expertise, and discuss how sharing this expertise with the interdisciplinary project team has helped us make the website more accountable to users. |
