Popis: The assessment of time-varying heat-flux magnitude in the IC engine is a very challenging but essential task. The use of coaxial thermal sensor to cyclic heat loads can provide better insight in terms of thermal endurance and continuous exposure to high temperature ambience. In addition, the prediction of such a time-varying heat flux in the engine provides information about the “hot-spot” region and the necessity for exploring new materials. Thus, the intended study aims at in-house fabrication of an E-type (Chromel-Constantan) surface junction thermal probe for assessing its capability in the highly transient thermal environment for measuring surface temperature and, subsequently its heat flux. The experiment evaluates the measurement capability and endurance of the sensor for a periodic change in heat load. For the proposed experiment, the engine head has been redesigned with a port to accommodate the sensor. The experiment has been conducted and the results have shown the satisfactory trend and magnitude which is ensured on being compared with the work reported by previous researchers. Further, the sensitivity value of the thermal probe is obtained as 58.96 µV/°C from its calibration data. The peak heat flux value inside the combustion chamber of an IC engine is estimated as 2.17 MW/m2 from the conducted experiments.
