Popis: Miscanthus x giganteus is a C4, rhizomatous, grass that is currently being considered by the European Union as a biomass energy crop on account of its high annual productivity. Most C4 plants have evolved in tropical or sub tropical climates and are therefore sensitive to low temperature. However, M. x gigantens originates from temperate regions in SE Asia and can achieve high rates of productivity in the cool climate of southern England where yields in excess of 20 t ha.-1 have been obtained (1). However, M. x gigantens is still more sensitive to chilling than native C3 species of NW Europe and in particular this can delay early season establishment and canopy closure.
