Popis: In this chapter, we take stock of the extant theoretical and empirical literature to propose directions for developing more comprehensive criminological theory that addresses the victimization of women. We begin by identifying the types and contexts of victimization most commonly experienced by women compared with men, specifically the greater likelihood of experiencing intimate partner violence, sexual assaults, and rape, and of being victimized by someone known to the victim. We review the major theoretical perspectives on the victimization of women, including feminist insights, routine activity theory, and structural or environmental factors. We then examine the literature on the consequences of women’s victimization, highlighting the links between experiences of victimization and a range of negative outcomes, and the timing of victimization and intervening coping responses that are interconnected over the life course. We conclude by suggesting that future theorizing would do well to take a context-congruent approach that can account for the unique characteristics of women’s victimization, women’s agency in precipitating or disrupting violence, and the ways structural and social contexts shape the intertwined causes and consequences of victimization over the life course.
