The ultimate goal of all fishpond management is the production of the largest possible amount of fish meat and, recently, also of duck or goose meat in some fishponds. Other purposes of fishpond management are secondary or complementary to its principal aim. Water retention, nature conservation, recreation and, locally, reed cultivation interfere to some extent with the present-day standard management of fishponds for maximum yields of fish. Certain limitations may be imposed on manuring and fertilizing of ponds used for recreational activities, or, exceptionally, a wide reed-belt may be maintained in fishponds serving as wildfowl refuges and declared as nature reserves. |
