A mathematical model of the eddy transport of space charge in a contaminant-free atmosphere is developed for oceanic regions in which surface radioactivity can be neglected. The model is formulated in terms of average net space charge density and average conductivity for scaling purposes. Non-dimensional parameters governing the vertical profiles of electric field, net space charge and conductivity are identified in terms of standard parameters of the constant-flux layer such as the friction velocity and roughness parameter, while electrical parameters are scaled according to the ratio of ionization rate to recombination coefficient. Several eddy diffusion coefficients are used in numerical experiments to investigate the influence of boundary layer stability and height of the exchange layer on the height of the electrical boundary layer. |
