Popis: SUMMARY1) Cytologicai studies have been carried out on the Himalayan mosses which has been an almost unexplored region till present. Special attention has been paid to the acrocarpic mosees. 55 species and one variety representing 10 families have been investigated. Out of these the chromosome number for 49 species, 16 genera and one family is reported for the first time. The chromosome numbers of all the investigated species are given in Table I.2) A discussion pertaining to various features of individual genera brought out by the present study in comparison to that of other workers, whenever possible, is given at the end of each genus.3) In Symhlepharis helicophylla striking quantitative differences have been observed between the populations of higher (12,000) and lower (8,000–9,000) altitudes. These differences are not, however, correlated with the chromosome number but may be genic in nature.
