Popis: A novel seed-holding apparatus is reported for use in crystal growth from low-temperature solution. The apparatus consists of a turntable rotating freely on a supporting base. Fins affixed to the edge of the turntable allow a growing crystal mounted in the center of the turntable to assume the same rotational velocity as the passing solution flow stream. Such application reduces potentially flaw-inducing rotational components of a solution flow stream resulting from the use of a centrifugal pump or impeller to effect forced convection. The apparatus has been used in aqueous solution growth of flaw-free single crystals of potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP). Crystals 6.3 cm 2 in cross-section were grown at rates as high as 4.1 mm/day in the Z direction.
