The conditions necessary for successful transmission of a planar detonation wave into a confined volume have been investigated. Detonation diffraction into a confined volume has not been as widely studied as detonation diffraction into an unconfined volume. Therefore, a new experiment was built to study detonation diffraction into a confined, cylindrical geometry. Of interest are the conditions necessary for the successful transformation of a planar detonation wave into a diverging cylindrical detonation wave as well as the measurement of the corresponding pressure profile on the endwall. Details on the new experimental facility are provided in this paper. Experiments have been performed using two different mixtures, C2H2 + 4 O2 and C2H2 + 2.5 O2, and the critical conditions necessary for successful transmission have been defined. It is shown that the critical conditions depend on two parameters, the primary detonation cell size ( ) and the gap width (w), and a correlation was obtained for the lean mixture as follows: w/ = 0.151w – 0.0944. |
