Electronic marketplaces (EM) are a comparably young approach of interorganizational cooperation. EM are virtual locations that are realized with the help of modern information and communication technologies, that serve as a platform for the concurrence of supply and demand, and that support the exchange of goods, services, and information in a market as agreed on by contract (Bakos 1991, pp. 32–33; Bichler 2001, p. 2). Here, they also provide information, agreement, settlement and after-sales functions, and services in addition to the general information (e.g., news from certain lines of industry) and to a description of products and services as well as of their respective suppliers. Below, the focus will be set on B2B (bussines-to-business) marketplaces that are characterized by the fact that vendors and customers are companies. Two cooperation types are to be distinguished in this environment: Cooperation of companies when setting up and operating the marketplace (operator cooperation) and cooperation of companies through the marketplace (e.g., within logistics processes). |
