Objective: To map the extent and type of evidence for children and young people’s participation in school enhancing wellbeing. Introduction: Links between wellbeing and school engagement are well established but studies have tended to focus on attendance, exclusion and behaviour, rather than participation in the school experience itself. This scoping review will consider the evidence base demonstrating associations between children and young people’s participation in school and their wellbeing. Participation is defined in this review as children and young people having an influence on matters that affect their lives, involving identifying, exploring, and interacting for change in everyday situations, school processes and structures. Inclusion criteria: Studies using any design that examine the relationships between participation in schools and children and young people’s (ages 7 to 18 years) wellbeing. Peer reviewed journal articles, systematic reviews, grey literature reports and theses will be included, written in any language, from any country. Methods: Searches will be conducted on four databases: PsycINFO, SocINDEX, ERIC, SCOPUS, and limited to publications since 1991. Handsearching will also be used, involving citation chaining using reviews or key papers, google and google scholar searches (first 200 hits for search terms) and examination of authors’ personal files. Identified articles will be independently screened and extracted by at least two researchers, with inter-rater reliability reported at all stages. Analysis will focus on evidence of any relationship between participation and wellbeing, key types of participation identified and impacts. Findings will be presented in tables and charts and described narratively. |
