The drive to lower the cost of components made from titanium and titanium alloys has led to the development of innovative processes for the production of powders and the consolidation of these powders into useful products. Direct rolling into fully consolidated strip and sheet appears as one of the most recent and economically adventurous consolidation techniques for metal powders. The quality of the green strip and sheet made by this process, with regard to the uniformity of both the green density and thickness across the width and along the length, are governed largely by the properties of the powder together with the feeding and processing conditions in roll compaction. The quality of the green sheet has a significant effect on the hot rolling behavior and the properties of the final, fully dense strip, and must therefore be carefully controlled. Under the appropriate fabrication conditions, a fully consolidated strip that meets ASTM B265 specifications has been demonstrated. |
