Popis: In Scotland as in other industrial countries the decline of traditional “heavy industries” like mining and smelting etc. have left large areas of derelict and vacant land Often the level of heavy metal contamination prevents redevelopment of the land to housing or agriculture. Also many present remediation techniques are expensive and therefore only suitable for small scale reclamation. These areas may be planted with coppice woodland to give an economic return and release agricultural land destined for growing woodland to crops By selecting and planting those tree species which are tolerant and/or accumulate heavy metals to higher levels a degree of phytoremediation may occur.
