Particle production in nucleon-antinucleon reactions

Popis: This talk reviews some recent developments in our understanding of particle production in nucleon-antinucleon (N) processes. First, we look at strangeness production processes p → Y (Y= Λ, Σ) near threshold, and compare transition mechanisms based on either meson exchange or the constituent quark model. It is pointed out that the depolarization parameter Dnn in p → bar-ΛΛ can be used to discriminate between both scenarios. In the second part, we turn our attention to the annihilation of the N system into two mesons, again from a conventional viewpoint based on baryon exchange and in the framework of a constituent quark model with rearrangement and annihilation. It is stressed that a realistic and consistent inclusion of initial- and final-state interactions is required before one can reliably explore the limits of such annihilation models.
