Nearly all existing passive touch screen technologies are not suitable for very large format displays. However, one touch technology, a machine vision system, can scale from small display formats to very large display formats including wall-sized displays. When very large displays are touch enabled, multi-user collaboration and the ability to detect pen or finger contact are desirable functions. Again, existing passive touch technologies other than a machine vision system cannot accommodate these needs. This paper presents an update on the development of a machine vision touch display technology that was first introduced at SID 2001. This update addresses the ability of this technology to have multiple simultaneous users, to detect the size and approximate shape and orientation of the object touching the display, determine whether the object is a finger, pen, or eraser, and to work with variety of display sizes. |
