The economic liberalization that has taken place in many Sub Saharan African countries over the last two decades has largely failed to bring about the dramatic growth needed to lift the countries out of poverty. Economic reforms have largely been in response to pressure from international financial institutions and bilateral donors. However, adjustments in Sub Saharan Africa have also been carried out in response to the widespread failure of command economies both at home and abroad, the reduction or cessation of support from former communist countries, and the pragmatism of some African leaders in the face of continually worsening economic conditions. |
