The wing rock problem is generally well known, but the high sensitivity of wing rock to variations in flow conditions and scale effects may not be as well understood. This paper discusses the scale sensitivity in the viscous flow mechanisms that have been identified in wing rock of conventional and high-performance airplane types. The question is addressed of whether wing rock encountered in full-scale flight can be observed at subscale flow conditions, and vice versa. It is shown that different unsteady forces are often at play in the corresponding flow regimes. When viscous flow interactions govern the wing rock phenomena, predictions based on subscale dynamic tests necessarily have to account for the full complexity of such interactions. |
