A possible system for harvesting solar energy is the photogeneration of hydrogen on colloidal platinum particles using the photoredox reaction of a dye and methyl viologen. The methyl viologen radical cation is reoxidised on the platinum particle. The flux of this reaction balances the flux of hydrogen generation so that there is no net current at the particle. The theory of this system is developed making no assumptions about the reversibility of the methyl viologen couple, or its bulk concentrations. Simple analytical expressions are obtained. The implications for the variation of H2 production with pH and for stopped flow spectrophotometry on the system are discussed. |
