The conventional binning process can be described in terms of a technology called oversampling radiography imaging and is equivalent to applying the moving average filter followed by downsampling. In order to improve the performance of detective quantum efficiency (DQE) when conducting a 2 × 2 binning process compared to the conventional binning, a method to apply the moving average filter multiple times is proposed in this paper. For a theoretical analysis of the multiple filtering, an image formation model with the noise power spectrum and DQE measurements is first constructed. Monte Carlo simulations are then conducted to observe the filtering performance based on the theoretical analysis. For direct mammography detectors, which are based on a-Se, the DQE values were increased by more than 20% at 2lp/mm compared to the conventional 2 × 2 binning process. Since the multiple application of the moving average filter requires only shifting registers instead of the complicate floating-point multiplications, the filter can be easily implemented at the hardware controller level and can provide a fast data transmission capability. |
