Phagocytes including polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN), monocytes, macrophages, and eosinophils are essential for host defense against certain microbes and probably play an important role in the surveillance and destruction of neoplastic cells. The production, maturation, and function of these cells appear to be regulated in a very complex manner by various cytokines including colony-stimulating factors (CSF) and other immune modulators. We will concentrate on the effect of CSF on the function of PMN. |
