Popis: The aim of this monograph was to expose the micro and macro linkages at the local regional or global level in their social political and economic settings. The Arizpe and Velaquez article discussed the failure of the Ehrlich/Simon dichotomies. Lutzs article presented the full perspective that was inclusive of the important variables such as population density rate of increase mortality age gender and migration locally nationally and internationally. Chapter 11 posited that the environment should not be narrowly defined. In chapter 7 Little discussed the cultural social and political factors that affected local conditions and desertification. New comprehensive research approaches were described by Arizpe and Velaquez. Global views did not adequately explain the links between population and environment. Models should be local and capture the causal links between production consumption and population. Kolsrud and Torrey focused on the importance of consumption by a new birth. Consumption of one person in the developed world was viewed as not equivalent to consumption of a person in the developing world. More methodological approaches were presented by Palloni in Chapter 5 on meta-analysis and principles of qualitative algebra. Schmink in Chapter 8 exposed the social and welfare issues and the effects of population size factors on deforestation. Reduced models were found to eliminate important intervening processes. Bilsborrow and Geores in Chapter 6 Little in Chapter 7 Schmink in Chapter 8 Bunker in Chapter 9 and Roberts in Chapter 10 revealed the environmental impact on poor people. The Rosenzeig and Parry article revealed the differences in regional geographic effects of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration. Sens essay highlighted the possibilities for mutual understanding by womens groups and environmentalists. Agarwals essay in Chapter 4 reviewed the literature on women and the environment. A range of theoretical perspectives and methodologies were provided.
