The magnetization of a paramagnetic salt is a relaxation process with a relaxation time depending on the external field and temperature. Measurements have been made with the object of determining relaxation times at various fields and temperatures in the liquid helium range. A description of the apparatus is given. The results show that paramagnetic relaxation is a complex phenomenon, and suggest that in any one specimen it must be described in terms of a distribution of relaxation times rather than a single relaxation time. In general we find that relaxation times are of the order of 10-2 sec., with a temperature dependence according to a power of 1/T between 2 and 3, while increasing with the external field H according to a power of H between 0 and 1. |
