We show some preliminary observations of "whispering gallery" modes in a sapphire rod 100 mm long and 20 mm in diameter. Traditionally dielectric ring resonators or short squat resonators (D/L/spl ges/1) have been used for the observation of such modes. Results of an oscillator employing these whispering gallery modes will also be given in this paper. |
