Radiocarpal fracture-dislocations are high-energy injuries that result in significant ligament and bony injuries, essentially an internal dislocation of the wrist. These injuries are often easily identified with plain radiographs and amenable to initial closed reduction. The most commonly used classification system delineates Type I and Type II injuries based on the size of the fracture involving the radial styloid. Despite occasional benign appearance on postreduction radiograph, these are best treated surgically with attention to both bony and ligamentous injuries. At times, numerous approaches must be utilized to address all bone and ligament injuries. With appropriate surgical treatment, reasonable outcomes can be achieved despite the severe nature of the injury. |
