Popis: | Some possible reasons for the declining stature of the traditional textile industry in the modern industrial scene are examined in detail. It is concluded that the principal reason is the fact that the industry has not sufficiently used recently introduced techniques of control engineering and mechanical handling to reduce its dependence upon highly specialised operative skills. The principles upon which modern industry is based are then discussed and it is suggested that, unless the textile industry adjusts itself to the changed conditions of modern life, it will not be able to attract to itself men and women of high quality without whom a prosperous and healthy future is not possible. Some of the ways in which the new techniques could be applied in different sections of the industry are discussed briefly, and some of the economic considerations affecting their introduction are discussed. |
