University campuses often include open spaces that are public in nature and part of the city but, at the same time, that differentiate themselves from the city. With different levels of public-private permeability, they tend to function as semi-contained lab-like places to analyse a number of phenomena, for example, conditions that foster unsafety in certain spots and trust in others. On the other hand, movements such as “Me too” and “He-for-she” have shown other types of violence that have been normalized for a long time and rooted in everyday life. These types of violence are not always reflected formally as criminal offences. The work presented is part of a wider project called “Spaces of trust in Ciudad Universitaria”. It seeks to identify spaces and moments where and when dynamics of trust are generated in such campus of UNAM. This project, in process, is carried out by an interdisciplinary group of students from four disciplinary fields and researchers from five schools or institutes. Among other activities, nine participatory mapping workshops were developed with members of the community to identify spaces indicated as places of trust or places of unsafety and discomfort. In this work, some data from this exercise is presented and compared, on the one hand, with criminal incidents reported and, on the other, with spatial conditions found in different types of spaces. Preliminary results indicate that, even though it is possible to promote physical characteristics that encourage spaces of trust, the diverse subject roles and social practices play a fundamental role in this sense. |
