Popis: This chapter talks about Robert Schaetzel, who was an old-style US diplomat that developed a reputation as having a sharp tongue that is always ready to take on his superiors in the State Department. It describes Schaetzel as a believer in the necessity of a closely knitted Atlantic community. Schaetzel had been a strong proponent of the Multilateral Force (MLF), the concept for a joint transatlantic nuclear force that Henry Kissinger had thoroughly attacked in his scholarly work. The chapter surveys some of the major events that shaped international relations in the first half of the 1970s, which the late historian Tony Judt has referred to as a protean moment in the international and national history of the times. An increasing number of historians view the 1970s as a crucial period of transition in recent world politics.
