Summary Investigations in several years at different places, mostly in botanical gardens, demonstrated 21 previously unknown spontaneous host species of broad bean wilt virus (BBWV). They belong to the following 13 families: * Acanthaceae , * Campanulaceae, Compositae , * Dipsacaceae, Labiatae, Liliaceae , * Loasaceae, Papaveraceae, Plantaginaceae , * Polemoniaceae, Scrophulariaceae , * Valerianaceae , and * Verbenaceae . Of the 7 families, marked by *, no spontaneous BBWV hosts were known before. Some of the new stated hosts may have some epidemiological importance. With the exception of two, the infected species showed symptoms. However, in most cases an additional infection by cucumber mosaic virus was present and only in case of Papaver rhoeas the previously observed syndrome was experimentally reproduced. Therefore nearly always the causal connection between and BBWV the observed disease symptoms is not secured. |
