Conformal radiotherapy planning tries to match a tumoricidal dose to the target volume, including a safety margin. At the same time this dose distribution must deliver a radiation dose as low as possible to normal or radio-sensitive tissues. Planning is thus one of the centre pieces of proton radiotherapy. To justify the very high expectations and the large costs of proton therapy, it should be significantly more successful than the conventional therapeutic modalities. It is difficult to attain these expectations, especially since conventional radiotherapy is progressing rapidly. |
