Popis: The increased demand for high quality water and the shortage of freshwater resources in Israel led to research on the improvement of the quality of secondary effluent for non-potable uses, especially for agricultural reuse. The best example for the application of this concept is the Dan Region Wastewater Reclamation Project, which provides for the collection, treatment, groundwater recharge, and multi-year storage of the effluent in the aquifer. The wastewater originates from the largest metropolitan area of the country, which includes the city of Tel-Aviv-Jaffa and several other neighboring municipalities. The project serves a total population of about 1.5 million persons, treating about 100 million m3 per year of municipal wastewater. After storage in the aquifer, the purified effluent is pumped from the aquifer through recovery wells, either directly to the distribution system or into the operational Negev Desert reservoirs which temporarily impound the water before its use for unrestricted agricultural irrigation.
