Conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to valuable intermediates is a critical step to develop effective biomass-to-fuels strategies. In this respect, we synthesize integrated strategies that convert lignocellulosic biomass into liquid fuels via production of platform chemicals such as levulinic acid and fermentable sugars. To generate the integrated strategies, we develop separation subsystems to achieve experimentally optimized feed concentrations for the catalytic conversion steps. Using process simulation models based on experimental results, we assessed the economic potential of these strategies. The results suggest that our integrated strategies can be competitive alternatives to current lignocellulosic biofuel production approaches. |
