The role of the uterus in reproduction may be divided into four major functions: 1. Throughout a series of well-defined maturational changes the endometrium prepares for embryo implantation. 2. Further endometrial and vascular changes accommodate the invading trophoblast and sustain the implanting embryo. 3. The uterus is adjusting to the growing fetoplacental unit, providing both nourishment and protection from physical injury. 4. There is a complex transition from a role of containment to expulsion in the later part of gestation and parturition, respectively. |
