Popis: Orthodox theologians tend to associate synodality with its universal manifestations in ecumenical and pan-Orthodox councils, often based on the pattern of the Apostolic Council in Jerusalem. Such discussions focus on the relationships among bishops (who do not exercise their ministries in isolation) and between the bishop and his diocese. But I propose that we deal earnestly with an unnoticed change in ecclesiology, namely the emergence of the parish as the locus of the eucharistic assembly. Especially in North America, the synodal co-responsibility of priest and faithful reaches new dimensions in the parish, with its multitude of ministries exercised in communion. Particularly relevant are the decision-making and liturgical aspects of parish life. Episcopal synodality is most efficient at the level of autocephalous churches, although lay participation is greatly reduced in this case.
