Popis: | It is with great sadness that I write with news that Mike Pressley died peacefully last night at his home. We will miss Mike greatly as a friend, colleague, and mentor. There are not enough words to honor Mike's distinguished career. His reputation as a scholar and his stature in the field of education and psychology are shared by few. His honors distinguish him with national and international renown. His awards from the most prestigious professional associations are testimony to his prominence and national impact. He received the Sylvia Scribner Award for career contributions to research in education from AERA (1995), the Oscar Causey Career Award for research in reading from the National Reading Conference (2000), and the E.L. Thorndike Award for career contributions to educational psychology from APA (2003). Mike served as editor of Journal of Educational Psychology (1996-2002), Applied Cognitive Psychology (1991—1994), and co-editor of the Journal of Reading Behavior (1992-1994), and co-author of the K-6 elementary language arts program titled Open Court. In 2005, Mike was awarded the title of University Distinguished Professor of Michigan State University, the highest academic honor within the university. Mike was a prolific author and his research led to balanced approaches to reading research instruction and assessment, to greater understanding of the cognitive processes underlying reading comprehension, and to policies and practices in education that have improved reading achievement of children in elementary schools. Mike is listed in the Thompson ISI highly cited list which is indicative of a citation rate in the top half of 1% of those cited in the research literature.
