Identifying that both pride and shame coexist in approaches to LOTEs, this chapter reviews how first language (L1) English speakers feel about the languages other than English (LOTEs) present in their lives. Shame is realised, among other instances, through the phenomenon of language cringe; that is, L1 English speakers feeling shame about their lack of multilingualism vis-a-vis their multilingual migrant partners. Pride is manifested in a discourse of praise, through acknowledging the linguistic challenges of migration, as well as through a positive evaluation of LOTEs. The chapter concludes by framing the pride/shame contrast as situated in the tension between a celebration of multilingualism and the subordination of linguistic diversity in Australia. |
