This chapter explores the potential long- and medium-term impacts of arts-based methods for research with children. Building cross-cultural and cross-community understanding through our work, we initiate conversations about ways of living together, the traumas of the past, children’s hopes and aspirations, and the similarities and shared interests of people from different faith backgrounds. The impacts of the Interfaith Childhoods workshops evidence how arts-based methods are empathetic and unobtrusive ways of gaining access into children’s lived experiences that can increase children’s self esteem. We offer two comprehensive impact studies about our project that highlight how arts-based methods improve children’s mental health and their connection to their heritage and culture, and demonstrate how arts-based methods offer a way to talk about religious and cultural diversity with children, enabling them to develop intercultural capacities and an understanding of religious diversity. |
