With the aid of an electrolytic saw, thin crystal slabs of selected orientation can be cut from rod-shaped metal single crystals to be studied by x-ray transmission techniques. A thin silk-insulated copper wire (without lacquer) soaked in dilute acid serves as cathode for the electrolysis. The wire touches the crystal (anode) but does not move relative to the crystal so that any abrasive effect is avoided. The whole section plane including the areas close to the rim is quite flat. The examination of the section plane by the double-crystal spectrometer technique shows that the maximum penetration depth of the dislocations produced is about 30 μm. It is possible to cut ionic single crystals with the same accuracy by a simple solution process. |
