Popis: The Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland (the Institute) functions as the competent authority for the control of sources of ionising radiation in Ireland, including the transport of radioactive material. The regulatory and licensing requirements, including inspection and enforcement activities as well as details of practical experience of the transport of radioactive material by road, rail, air and sea into and out of Ireland are presented. The Institute's role in the management of transport related incidents, provision of information and international cooperation is also discussed. The Institute has undertaken a review of Irish legislation that relates to the transport of dangerous goods by road and rail. An overview of the findings is presented. To address the issues arising from the legislation review and the multitude of tasks generally associated with transport matters, the Institute compiled a series of suggested actions to be addressed in the period 2005–2007.
