Popis: In the presence of declining genetic variability among cultivated forms of crop species, breeders’ interest has blossomed over the past two decades in the preservation and introgression of exotic and wild species. Future genetic improvement in crop productivity and quality is potentially constricted by the narrow genetic base from which breeders practice selection. Pervasive in the literature is the rationale that introgression of wild or exotic germplasm will restore genetic variability in those breeding populations targeted for selection—not just for simply inherited traits such as disease resistance, but also for quantitatively inherited traits with direct economic importance.
