Popis: The chapter reviews contributions on three approaches to theory building on peace: peace through modernization, peace through democratization, and peace through law and international institution building. Our basic thesis is that liberal European theory building owes a lot to the tradition of Kant on the one hand, but on the other hand carries with it a reflection on the inherent limitations and contradictions of each of the three approaches. In addition to the inherent (reflexive) critique of liberal approaches to theory building on peace there is also a critique of the liberal approach to theory building as such. However, we suggest that the intra-European critique of liberal theory building itself is rooted in the liberal tradition in as much as it functions as some kind of critical liberalism.
