Popis: | Laparoscopic resection for rectal cancer has increasingly gained support over the last years. Sexual and urinary functions are two elements pertaining to the Quality Of Life (QOL) that may be significantly altered. Postoperative urinary and sexual dysfunctions resulting from damage to the autonomic nervous system are recognized complications following rectal surgery. Laparoscopic surgery can potentially facilitate preservation of these nerves. However, there are insufficient data in the literature addressing this issue. A systematic review of the literature was carried out using PUBMED/MEDLINE data-bases to identify all studies that compare laparoscopic vs. open resection of rectal cancer using Total Mesorectal Excision (TME) that include results on QOL for the patients. The purpose of this article is to systematically review the current literature reporting sexual and urinary functions following laparoscopic rectal surgery to determine possible risk factors and identify questions that should be addressed in the future. |
