Popis: Oral candidiasis can cause serious problems in patients with HIV/AIDS and Candida albicans is the main infectious agent. The use of medicinal plants in treatment is a promising strategy to avoid the use of antifungals, which can cause several adverse effects. The aim of this work was to evaluate the antifungal and antibiofilm activities and mode of action of the aqueous extract of the inner bark of Myracrodruon urundeuva Allemao against Candida albicans isolated from the oral mucosa of HIV/AIDS patients, as well as the effects of the extract in combination with oral antimicrobials. The minimum inhibitory concentration, combination effects with oral antimicrobial agents, and mode of action were determined using a broth microdilution technique. The tetrazolium sodium salt (XTT) colorimetric method was used for biofilm detection. The extract was able to inhibit 90% of C. albicans isolates at a concentration of 31.25 μg/mL, showed synergism with nystatin, and inhibited the biofilm formation by C. albicans. The aqueous extract of M. urundeuva has the potential to be used as a mouthwash for the prevention of oral candidiasis caused by C. albicans and as a new antifungal therapy.
