This paper is concerned with an application of the boundary element method (BEM) to finding flaws or defects in structural components. In one of the proposed methods based on the BEM for elastostatics, strains or stresses which can be easily measured are used as the reference data. The boundary element computation in elastostatics is carried out for an assumed shape of an unknown flaw in question. Then, the calculated results are compared with the reference data and the assumed flaw shape is modified. The computation is iterated until the boundary element solution converges to the reference data. Furthermore, it is shown that a similar integral equation approach is applicable to the problems governed by Laplace's equation. Finally, the potential usefulness of the proposed method is revealed through the numerical computation of a few sample problems. |
