Coronary heart disease (CHD) accounts for the majority of cardiovascular disease (CVD) deaths in men and women. Abnormal function of the heart and blood vessels increases the risk for heart attack, heart failure, sudden death, stroke, and cardiac rhythm problems, thus resulting in decreased quality of life and decreased life expectancy. The causes of CVD range from structural defects to infection, inflammation, environment, and genetics. The greater the number of reported risk factors, the more likely will an individual be to develop heart disease. Some risk factors are modifiable such as diet and lifestyle. Improvements can help reduce major risk factors and reduce the risk of CHD. Other factors are non-modifiable, such as age and sex, and contribute to a higher risk score of CHD. This review will focus on the metabolic advantages of bioactive nutrients for the prevention of CVD. |
