Popis: | Barbara Bair looks at the close relationship and cross-influences between Walt Whitman and his friends William and Ellen O'Connor, which were forged out of the antislavery and woman's rights politics of the 185os and fostered through the radical abolitionist publishing house of Thayer and Eldridge in Boston. Their association continued in wartime Washington, D.C., and lasted for the rest of the trio's lifetimes. Bair interprets William O'Connor's novel Harrington, and examines the personal politics of the three friends in relation to the complexity of reformers' utopian hopes for a more equitable society to emerge via the Civil War and its aftermath. |
