Globalisation and the rapid development of countries can endanger modern heritage and, unfortunately, in spite of preservation efforts, modern heritage sites continue to be damaged and destroyed. Professor Dongjin Kang, Department of Urban Planning and Engineering, Kyungsung University, South Korea, wants to conserve modern heritage sites in specific regions in Korea. Part of this involves changing the perceptions of local people on modern heritage by ensuring that modern heritage is adequately understood. As such, he and his team are constructing an archive of modern heritage sites that are in need of preservation. A primary goal for the researchers is to discover effective means of working with citizens in order to encourage their participation. Therefore, Kang and the team produce leaflets and local newspapers, make and propose future regional maps, and deliver seminars and lectures. In recent work, Kang has been working to communicate the historical importance of Port Pier 1, Busan; namely its significant influence in the modern history of Korea. From 2009 to 2014, Kang organised the 'Hialeah Park Forum' and participated in the civic movement to turn the US military base (Camp Hialeah) into a civic park, successfully changing citizens' perspectives. Now, the researchers are focusing on conserving the silos of Jaseongdae Pier in Busan Port. |
