There is a tendency nowadays in development work on frictional mater ia ls to t ry to obtain high f r ic tional proper t ies not only by improving the quality of the mater ia ls of rubbing pairs but also by modifying the design of fr ict ional units with the aim of ensuring the most favorable conditions of heat t ransfer . The effects of surface design upon the se rv ice charac te r i s t i c s of fr ict ional pairs operating inmaindr ive clutches has so far received little attention in the l i terature. However, several authors [1, 2] have recommended that fr ict ional elements in the form of buttons attached to supporting disks should be used in order to improve the operating per formance of brake pairs . It has been shown that such an a r ragement of matting su r faces (giving a coefficient of mutual contact, Kmc , of < 0.5) substantially increases the amount of energy that a unit can dissipate and improves the wear res is tance of both elements of the pair , without adversely affecting the latter's frictional properties compared with disks fitted with annular linings (Kmc ~ i). |
