Divalent metal fluorides exhibit many anomalous properties as a result of their high anionic conductivity at temperatures characterized by a heat capacity peak at T c which occurs several hundred degrees below the melting temperature. Measurements of the thermal expansion and the temperature variation of the optical path length at 632.8 nm from 300 to 1300 K have been made on single-crystal BaF 2 . The linear thermal expansion coefficient obtained from these measurements is anomalously large near T c reflecting the influence of the Frenkel defect concentration. The temperature derivative of the index of refraction obtained from these measurements does not appear to be proportional to the thermal expansion coefficient as expected but does exhibit anomalous behavior near T c . |
