Chapter 6 discusses the period from mid-1924 until late 1928. It begins with Nâzım’s return to Istanbul, where he was supposed to work on behalf of the Turkish Communist Party, which was still a legal organization in Turkey. However, Nâzım’s time in Turkey was beset with difficulties, both personal and political. Nüzhet, whom Nâzım had married when she had visited him in Moscow, broke up with him shortly after his return to Istanbul. More ominously for Nâzım, the Turkish government cracked down on politics in the wake of the Sheikh Sait rebellion of March, 1925, closing all opposition parties. Wanted by Turkish authorities due to his work for the TKP, Nâzım escaped back to Moscow, where he would again reside until the second half of 1928. Nâzım continued to write during these years, with sections of this chapter examining his changing poetic styles in the 1920s. The chapter ends with Nâzım returning once again to Turkey at the end of 1928 in order to undertake ‘clandestine’ work for the now-illegal TKP. |
