Group transfer polymerization (GTP) and the related Aldol-GTP are new types of living polymerization mediated by silicon for precise control of polymer structure. The two processes are regenerative in that the reactions are accompanied by transfer of silyl group from living end to the incoming monomer and vice versa to produce a reactive functional group as the living end. The reaction can be carried out on solid supports, such as crosslinked polystyrene. Even though the reactions are normally catalyzed, they can be carried out at high pressures without the use of any catalyst. They operate above room temperature, thus enabling one to control molecular weight, polydispersity and monomer sequence under industrially significant conditions. The scope of catalysis is broadened to cover oxyanions. |
